Is All This Really for Me?

Posted on June 8, 2014

Happy Bunday! Thanks, Jeremy, Sabrina, Calvin, Hobbes and bunny Bucky! Sabrina writes:

We built a ‘Bunny Box‘ in our back yard to allow our bunny Bucky to have a chance to hop around, dig and enjoy some (supervised) outdoor time. We even planted all kids of yummy plants for him to nibble on as well. When we first put him in the box he almost couldn’t believe his little bunny mind. He kept hopping around and looking up at us as if to say ‘This is really all mine?’ Then he decided that all the dirt and plants were well and good, but what he really wanted was to eat the box, so he began digging up the plants that got in his way.

What a delightful boy Bucky is. Is he, perchance, a giant breed?

    • pictureclepto June 17, 2014 at 9:19 am

He’s not quite a giant breed but he is a big boy. Our best guess is that he’s a Rex mix of some kind. A bunny I had a long time ago was a pure bred French Lop and his was HUGE, Bucky is no where near as big as that guy was.

I love hearing about stories where bunny parents go the extra mile to spoil their buns. They are such wonderful creatures and deserve a little spoiling. This is a wonderful idea.

Such a cute bun! With that little toupee of hair at the top of his head! And this bunny box is a great idea! Thanks for sharing =)

Any chance that the family can share their construction plans or sketches (or even just a simple “how to”) for the bunny box? We’d absolutely love to duplicate for our house rabbits too!

It is a very simple box design that we used to make planter boxes, just the plants we had planned to plant in it died off so we had an unused box.

We used 4x4s for the four corners, and 1x6x8 planks for the sides.

The short sides are cut to about 3ft and the long sides 5 feet and the 4x4s are about 3 ft tall (so we can put a netted covering over the top and still give the buns room to stand and peek out over the side but not hop out since our back yard isn’t safe for free range bunny play).

We started by constructing the short sides — screwing the 1×6 planks to the 4x4s so we had ends of the box completed.

We used 3 planks for each side so the sides were approx 18in high.

After completing the ends we stood them up facing each other and screwed in the longer boards for the sides. We didn’t construct a floor, we just sent the box in the planting area and added planting soil and plants, but a floor could be added if need be.

As I said, it is a very simple and basic design and it can be made to what ever size that is needed depending on your bun and the space available.

Thank you SO MUCH for replying with your “how to”, pictureclepto! This will be my summer project. The bunnies will love it. Thanks again for taking the time to respond!
